Stephen King Braves Extreme Wind Conditions at the Blackbeard’s Revenge 100K Challenge Along the Outer Banks of North Carolina

Outer Banks, North Carolina – The Blackbeard’s Revenge 100K Ultra-Run, a unique and challenging point-to-point race set along the length of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, saw participants from all over the world come together to test their mettle and endurance. The event, which took place this past weekend, has been praised for its stunning scenery, supportive community, and memorable post-race festivities.

Starting in the picturesque town of Corolla, the Blackbeard’s Revenge 100K Ultra-Run course stretched the entire length of the Outer Banks, finishing in Hatteras. The 100% paved road course offered participants beautiful views, long-distance challenges, and great memories while running alongside the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound.

Strong winds made this year’s race even more challenging, with participants facing 20-30 mph headwinds and gusts up to 40 mph. The extreme conditions turned the race into a test of survival and determination, with runners having to dig deep to tolerate the difficult weather.

The 100K winner, Paul Martino, described the race as “brutal,” adding, “100K into 20-30 mph winds with gusts up to 40. This turned into a survival race, and who wanted to tolerate these extremely difficult conditions.” Martino’s victory was a testament to his grit and resolve in the face of adversity.

Among the participants was Triple Victor athlete Stephen King, who unfortunately had to withdraw at the 60.5-kilometer point due to hamstring cramps. King recently celebrated the birth of his newborn child, which, while a joyous occasion, limited his ability to train for the race. He later recounted his experience, saying, “I felt great until about mile 32 [when] the wheels came off. Stomach did great and everything else felt great, but from the waist down [everything] stopped working.” His withdrawal serves as a reminder of the race’s demanding nature and the importance of being prepared for the unpredictable challenges it presents.

The event organizers ensured that participants were well-supported throughout the race, with well-stocked aid stations offering a variety of refreshments, such as electrolyte drinks, water, energy gels, and an assortment of snacks. Volunteers, who have been lauded for their enthusiasm and support, were on hand at each aid station to offer encouragement and assistance.

Drawing participants from across the globe, the Blackbeard’s Revenge 100K Ultra-Run fostered a sense of camaraderie and shared passion among the runners. Locals also played a significant role in the event, with spectators lining the course to cheer on participants and celebrate their achievements.

Finishers of the grueling 100K challenge were rewarded with a distinctive pirate-themed medal, a high-quality technical race shirt, and a treasure trove of other goodies. The post-race festivities featured live music, a delicious spread of food and beverages, and an opportunity for runners to unwind and share their experiences with fellow participants.

The Blackbeard 100K Ultra-Run has quickly become a must-attend event for ultra-runners seeking a challenging course, breathtaking scenery, and an unforgettable experience. As participants revel in their achievements and memories from this year’s event, the ultra-running community eagerly awaits the next edition of this thrilling adventure in the diverse landscapes of North Carolina.
